Group psychotherapy is a therapeutic treatment procedure that uses group dynamics (summary of group events, relationships and contacts). It is a regular meeting, typically once a week of 8 clients and a therapist, where the goal is individual help to these individuals with the help of group activities. Typical goals are to gain insight into the problems of individuals, to help them understand and change their unhelpful attitudes, to change unhelpful behavior, to convey knowledge about the mechanisms of interpersonal functioning for more efficient dealings with other people, personal self-development and training in managing and solving interpersonal situations. It is proven that participation in group events contributes very positively to the fulfilment of individual therapeutic goals. The role of the client in group therapy is active, he is actively involved in what is currently happening in the group. In a therapy group, we can expect a friendly, accepting atmosphere that provides a sense of safety and support.
And what exactly is it that heals? There are several effective factors, the primary one being participation in a therapeutic group, acceptance, a sense of security and emotional support. An important part is open self-expression, while also helping others. In the therapy group, repressed emotions are also released, which contributes very positively to the treatment. It is also essential to get feedback from others, which is an important source of information for your own self-development and revealing your blind spots. Last but not least, we gain new information, social skills and often experience new feelings that move us forward in our lives.
The course of the group meeting itself is different, sometimes the group can be focused on a given topic, sometimes it is devoted to therapeutic techniques, training of specific skills, other times it can be devoted to a specific member, other times perhaps to the current experiences of several of its members.
